Rasa had been sleeping the whole day after the misty night, only waking up for meals, and on the second day she was finally ready to go out and enjoy some sunlight. The sun was shining inside so warmly, that she forgot to put on a coat and walked out only to shiver seeing her breath turn to steam. She turned around to run back in, but almost ran into a white haired girl, she hadn't even talked to before.

"Ah, it's you!"  Alicia looked at Rasa, and remembered her from the night of the gray storm.  "Are you going to head out, too?  If so, your cloth is a bit thin.  Let's get something warm for you and play together!" She grinned warmly, then remembered she had forgotten to introduce herself, "Oh, sorry, it was rude of me.  It's Alicia here, what's your name?"

Rasa looked at the white haired girl surprised. They hadn't talked before, so this level of friendliness was overbearing. "I'm Rasa," the girl said and headed inside. She did need to get something warm to wear and Alicia seemed to know where to get the clothes.

The two girls headed up all the way to the study room.  "There, I found a lot of warm cloth over there!" Alicia pointed at a few boxes by a shelf.  "Ah... I wonder if here would be any skaters?  If there was a lake around here, we could try to ice-skate..." She looked at them and mumbled to herself.

"There is a river," Rasa said, thinking about water spaces. "Sea doesn't work?" She was searching through the boxes and soon enough found a white coat that fit her size and coupled with a black muffler and gloves her outfit was complete. Rasa wasn't sure what skaters were, having spent most of her childhood indoors, especially so in winters.

"No... I guess it wasn't cold enough for rivers to freeze." Alicia answered, disappointed, "And sea doesn't work.  Unless we want to swim in the winter sea."  Thinking of the icy-old water,  even Alicia shivered a little.  She had barely ever felt cold before.

"Maybe there's something like a big pond in the swamp?" Rasa suggested, thinking it was a wet place, so something like that being there made sense. Rasa choose to look for some boots, but when she opened a box, she spotted some with a metal blade on them-- she tilted her head and took one out, clearly puzzled.

"Oh, you found them!"  Alicia looked at them, pleasantly surprised.  "These are ice skates, if you didn't know.  We can slide on ice with them--And yes, I guess it's very possible to find one in the swamp."  She clasped her hands together, wearing a wide grin.  "Oh, by the way- it's very random, but what is your ability?"  Alicia blinked, her smile turned somehow witty.

"Oh--" Rasa nodded lightly and tried to find a pair that seemed to be her size. Rasa froze when Alicia asked. Rasa was avoiding to use her ability, because it creeped her out. "It's a creepy ability..."

Alicia also found a pair that fit her.  She stood up and made sure it didn't hurt her feet. "Creepy... I guess there is only one explanation..."  Alicia sighed, "So... You see weird black hands, too?"

"Too..." It hit her that the white haired girl was the same type as her. Rasa nodded, her lips were tightly closed, like she didn't know what to say about it or didn't know what was all right to say. She also wasn't aware that others could not see the black hands and then her face became puzzled. "-- how did you push that boy out?"

"With one of those arms." Alicia answered, then it occurred to her that Rasa probably didn't know they were invisible to others,"In case you are wondering, no one can see them except for yourself.  Anyway-- I asked that because..." she checked one last time that the skates fit her, then went and open the window.  "Have you ever realized that we can just fly to wherever we want?"  She smiled, then stepped out of the window.

Rasa was completely surprised about others not being able to see them and breathed out relieved. But then another shock came... "--Fly?"

"Yeah, have you ever tried it?" Alicia reappeared by the window, floating in the air, "Come on, let's go!" She grinned brightly, waving for her to come, "Don't worry, if you concentrate, you won't fall.  If you do, though- I will catch you."

Rasa put out one of the black arms and put her skaters on it, then jumped on a windowsill and cautiously placed two arms on the ground, pushing herself high up in the air, she couldn't yet control it properly, so like a cat she freaked out, afraid to move being 28 m up in the air, a fair chunk above the tree tops.

"Hahahah, I know, I know, but no need to be afraid- trust yourself.  Here, I will take this."  Alicia laughed lightheartedly, then took the skates from Rasa, so she could concentrate on herself.  "Take a breath, don't look down." Saying that, Alicia still formed an arm behind her back, in case Rasa does fall.

Easier said that done, Rasa was looking right down and is frozen stiff. "How exactly--" she started saying, but then a gust of wind came hitting her off balance. Frantically Rasa put the hand Alicia freed in front and-- success, she had moved forward. It was a lot like moving on stick legs, except it felt fluid, like she was actually hanging in air and no pressure could be felt on any part of her body, even if arms appeared to come from her sides. She was still very afraid, but now a tad of excitement lingered in her heart, she put another arm forward and another and soon the fear started to fade. "I'm flying--" her eyes were sparkling.

"You've got it, Rasa!" Alicia's eyes were sparkling, too, with a wide grin on her face.  "Isn't it wonderful?  It feels great after a while, doesn't it?  Let's get to the swamp!"  She turned around in mid-air, waiting for Rasa to come.

Rasa nodded and had the hands below dash into a make-shift run. It really did feel like flying. Soon enough they came to the region with small pine trees and-- bingo. A bit further away something was sparkling. Walking closer revealed that it was a big pond frozen over. Rasa carefully put herself down and stepped onto the ice-- it didn't crack. Pressing on it with one of the black hands didn't make it crack either, it seemed frozen well.

Alicia landed on the ice gently.  "Here, you will need these." She handed Rasa her skates.  She hid away all the black hands and carefully stepped out a foot.  To be honest, she wasn't an expert on skating herself, but she knew the form.  Training in a circus for years, she learned how to keep balance at all times.  Though the surface wasn't too smooth, Alicia could slide around a little without stumbling, "Hey, this is fun!  Come on, Rasa!" She smiled brightly and reached out a hand to her, "Let's skate together."

Rasa had barely put on the skates as a hand was reached out to her. She took it without thinking and only then noticed how slippery it was to stand on the ice. Despite being good with balance, she almost fell face front.

"Woah--!"  Being dragged by Rasa, Alicia almost lost her balance, too; but she didn't use a shadow arm to support her.  It'd be more fun if all of this was her own effort -- if she were to use her ability, all these would be too easy.  "Slowly, slowly..." She mumbled under her breath and glided her right foot's blade along the icy surface.  Her white tail swayed at her back, keeping the balance.  "Try it, Rasa.  It's not too bad after you get used to it."  She turned her head to face Rasa, encouraging her.

Being pulled along, Rasa eventually figured out, how to keep her balance, want it or not. At least - it was so while she didn't move her legs. Carefully she mimicked Alicia's movements and eventually it led to skating. Her eyes lit up, once she felt safe enough to let go of Alicia's hand. But then came the next struggle-- how to stop? She seemed to be going faster and faster and the end of the water-space was close.

Seeing Rasa moving away from her and closer to the edge without any intent to stop, Alicia suddenly remembered that Rasa didn't know how to brake.  "Make a turn! Make a turn! Turn your body to the side! Oh my God--"  Alicia winced, didn't want to see Rasa to fall over.  She didn't want to use her ability, but of course, she was sure if necessary, Rasa could handle it herself-- it was just an instinct to look away.

Alicia's warning came a bit late and even if she tried to turn sideways, she didn't exactly know how to do it right, so she stumbled, but by instinct the black hands came to help and she didn't fall, just hung a bit above the ice. She pushed herself up, though and now was standing still. "How exactly do you turn-- to stop?" She turned to Alicia, it didn't sound like a good plan to always depend on ability to stop.

Alicia furrowed her eyebrows, trying to form an answer.  "Honestly, I am so sure how to put this myself.  It's more of an instinct... You know, like how you swing your tail to change direction?  Hmm... I will try to demonstrate, don't laugh."  She stepped out and began gliding on the ice.  As she approached the edge, she bent her knees and turned to her side, pivoting her heel and dug her skate slightly into the ice.  "See?  Just don't keep accelerating when you are about to stop, then this shouldn't be hard."  Alicia smiled, her tail swaying at her back.

A demonstration helped. Rasa got on the ice and tried to replicate Alicia's movements. It didn't turn out as cleanly the first time around, but after a couple more tries, she managed to stop naturally. "Thank you," she said and went on to skate, now feeling way more comfortable - knowing how to stop and knowing how to move, made this whole business fun.

"Anytime.  It's all about having fun, right?" Alicia smiled and skated alongside Rasa.  After a while, both of them began to get better at the basics.  "Hmm, let's try something new, shall we?" Alicia suggested.

"Like what?" Rasa asked stopping easily on the ice, having learned a new trick, she was eager to use it a lot.

"Try skating backward."  Alicia answered and began testing it out herself.  She was careful, bending her knees and holding up her arms by her side to keep balance.  After a few failed attempts (plus a few times almost falling over), Alicia found herself able to skate backwards without looking too awkward, but she still needed to pay a lot of attention to keep balance.

Rasa turned around and carefully put her legs after one another, it was easier than it looked. Well-- considering she had only just learned to move forward, moving backward wasn't all that different. It was all new and seeing an example helped a lot. Soon enough Rasa was skating forwards, then backwards, then stop, then the same routine - it was fun.

Alicia skated around the edge of the water space, lowering her body and felt herself accelerating each time she glided forward.  She skated one lap after another with an excited smile on her face.

Rasa followed after Alicia, though not as fast as she alternated between backwards and forwards, but soon as the switches between the directions became more fluid, she noticed that another step could make you spin. Her face lit up and a small smile was on her lips all the while as she slowly learned to spin around - a half- spin, three fourths then a full one. This was fun!

"Come on, let's dance!"  Alicia skated past Rasa and grabbed her hands, spinning on the ice.  Since now she learned to skate backwards, she did so while pulling Rasa along, just like dancing an ice waltz.

"Whoa--" Rasa was surprised at first, completely clueless about what Alicia was trying to do-- she had no idea about waltzes and such, but in a short while she got used to it and started to laugh, stopping in the middle of the ice and spinning Alicia around. They were going so fast - way faster than she could run and that was exciting.

Alicia giggled and skated in circles, then made a stop and gave Rasa a twirl.  Neo danced like that all the time, so she learned a thing or two from him.  It wasn't exactly a waltz, but who cares about that when it was fun.  She panted a little from laughing and skating that fast, her cheeks tinted with blush.

Rasa was surprised about the twirl, but-- that was a nice thing to do. She thought about trying to mix that in the middle of skating later on. This was intense-- and soon enough she was out of breath. Skating was fun! She panted trying to catch her breath, her cheeks red from frost and from moving so fast.

"Phew-- I feel hot and cold at the same time!"  Alicia patted her cheeks.  It felt like they were burning, but the cold air made them feel cold at the same time.  "Hey Rasa, have you ever seen snow?"  Alicia stopped for a moment, catching her breath.

"Yeah--" Rasa said, in between longer breaths. "This place gets a lot of it later on-- it's too early now."

"It's strange.  I am an Arctic fox, but I've only seen it once--"  Alicia laughed softly, "I sneaked out of the circus for an hour, and of course-- I was found soon and taken back.  But it was beautiful...  If it snowed, we could come out and play with it!"

"Snow is wet and cold," Rasa said with a light shrug. "This weather is a lot better, at least the sky is clear." Rasa only vaguely knew what circus was, but she wasn't interested enough to inquire about it further, from the way Alicia spoke it didn't seem like a good place.

"Hahah, that's true.  It's been a while since we had such a nice weather." Alicia laughed, sliding along the ice casually.  "Say, do you still hate your ability that much now?"

Her eyes shifted from side to side, then she seemed to look down "...Not as much, but-- it's the same..." She paused. "The same as those black grays that night--" She said the last part more quietly.

"Black grays..." Alicia blinked, then suddenly remembered.  Yes, that night of the gray storm, when the black cumimis crossed the boarder...   When they disappeared, the black, inky sand resembled a lot like the arms that she was able to summon.  "I don't understand, sometimes." Alicia stopped on the ice, her bangs draped over her eye as she lowered her head, "Am I wrong to hate those who destroyed me life?  Is it fair... that I deserve to become one of... them...?" She looked at her hand, recalling the time that black cumimi disappeared in front of her eyes.

Being in the same boat she could only shrug her shoulders. She was going to end up like that, because of humans-- and that only made her hate them more. "The one who made those rules was a fucking douche-- how can you not hate them-- when they-- fucking do shit all the time!"

"Hmm... I guess there is nothing we can do about the God, in that case."  Alicia smiled dryly, " To be honest-- I am really, really tired, hating all this time.  But there are just things that I can't forget... or forgive."  Alicia gritted her teeth, remembering the fire, the circus, and the beginning of it all-- those children's screams and the disgust in their eyes.

"I guess," Rasa sighed and went back to skating. It was meaningless to think about it, but it was so very, very unfair.

"Awww, don't be so cold!"  Alicia chortled lightly, leaving her thoughts behind.  She already got what she wished for the most in the circus, didn't she?

"Cold?" Rasa didn't get the phrase and touched her cheek instead. "I think I am cold...but aren't you too?"

"Uh..." Alicia was speechless for a moment.  Well, technically, Rasa wasn't wrong... "I... guess so..."  She didn't bother to explain.  "Ahahah, don't mind that!"  Alicia waved it off.  "I wish there was music... How can you dance without that?"  She murmured to herself.  She had seen her parents dancing in their small living room, with a radio playing a soft, sweet melody.  She hummed the parts of that song that she could still recall to herself and began skating with her arms spread, as if she was dancing.

Rasa knew only church songs, this one was not one of them. "What's that song?" She skated next to Alicia, clueless what the girl was doing. She spread her arms as well, but didn't quite get the idea, till she saw that Alicia was moving her legs as she hummed, then tried to match her.

"It has a pretty weird name... What is it again...?" Alicia patted her forehead, trying to remember," I think it's called... Salut d'amour."

"Salu-- okay..." Rasa gave up and tried to learn to hum the same melody.

Alicia could't remember the whole song, so she just repeated the parts that she knew.  She took Rasa's hands and began swinging with her in circles.

Rasa learned the parts Alicia knew, even if she made the words up that sounded similar to those and made up the rest of the song as well. It didn't matter what it was about in the beginning, now it was a song about sun and ice and skating.

Alicia sang with Rasa, wearing a slight smile on her lips all this time.  Soon, the girls made up an entire song that only resembled the original in melody-- at the refrain, Alicia gave Rasa a twirl and giggled.

Rasa laughed and at the next refrain gave a twirl to Alicia. There was almost a dance made just for the song - with various moves and spinning around and twirls and changing up the way they skated. After they skated some more, Rasa's stomach growled. "--I think it's time for lunch." She stopped and tried catching her breath.

"Ehhh~! Your tummy tells you the time?" Alicia's ears perked up, looking at Rasa's stomach curiously.  However, she herself felt a little hungry as well.  "Heh... Yeah, lunch will be nice right now "  She flew up into the air and smiled at Rasa, " Let's head back?"

Rasa nodded. "Food is important." When Alicia flew up in the air, Rasa picked up her boots with one hand and followed Alicia. It was strange how natural these hands started to feel - they were still a bit odd and not always accurate, but every time she used them, they felt more and more like a part of her own body.

The girls flew back to the house, but to their surprise-- the window was closed.  Alicia tapped on the glass, and a blue-haired boy came to check.  When he saw them floating in the air, the look on his face made Alicia laugh to the point her stomach hurts. She remembered him, Valen, that boy that made a shield for her against the gray's attack that night.  Valen opened the window for them, after the shock passed.

Rasa waved a hello to him and after changing the skates to indoor shoes and putting the coat away together they went to lunch.

***

Rasa was sleeping in the library on the third floor, having curled up on the window sill.

Alicia entered the third floor's library, wanting to do some light reading in the attic before lunch.  She noticed Rasa by the window, and since Rasa was sleeping Alicia didn't say hello to her.  She was careful not to make any sounds, but she accidentally knocked down a book when she took the one next to it out of the shelf.

Rasa heard the sound and slowly got up, rubbing her eyes. She yawned, then looked around properly, spotting Alicia. "Yo."

"Hello..."  Alicia sighed, then greeted her with a smile.  She picked up the book that fell onto the ground and patted the dirt off it.  "Sorry to wake you up, I didn't mean to."  She apologized to Rasa, while she put it back to the shelf.

Rasa yawned and rubbed her eyes. "That's fine--" She got up and stretched both up and leaning down, displaying a high level of flexibility. "So you-- plan to read?" Rasa wanted to invite Alicia to play, but-- it was hard for her to say something like that.

"..."  Alicia looked at the bright sunlight outside of the window, then back to the book in her hand, then back to the outside.  Ahhh...!  I really want to finish the book, but the sun is so nice today... But I really want to know what happened next... But the sun...  Her conflicted expression showed how hard she was struggling to make a decision.

"Do you know about the crossroads?" she asked trying to be casual.

"The crossroads... You mean that path beside the cemetery?"  Alicia tilted her head.  Her tail swayed back and forth as she thought about the decision.  "I haven't been there, but it sounds exciting. Hehehe..."  She smiled slyly, her ears perking up in excitement.

"Yeah, it's in that direction," Rasa said. "I have been to one road from it - it was dangerous, I stepped on a mine, but I don't know about the other two."

"You stepped on a..." Alicia sighed.  How could Rasa take such a thing so lightly?  "You didn't get hurt? I mean, it's a mine after all..." She looked at Rasa carefully, making sure she was actually all right.

"Mine, it exploded--" Rasa said with a frown. "It's scary, better not go there"

"...It's not the point...=A=" Alicia decided to drop the subject.  As long as Rasa was okay, it shouldn't matter that much.  "All right, let's head out!"

Rasa tilted her head not quite getting where the point was, but since Alicia dropped the matter, so did she. She nodded and after they both got dressed, she went outside the house. "Shall we fly there?"

Alicia thought for a moment.  The crossroads should be pretty far from the house-- and it should be good practice, too.  "Yeah, let's do that."  She agreed and summoned an arm that raised her into the air.

Rasa kicked off the ground with two shadow hands and leaped into the air, higher than before. It was not the sort of even flying she did now, but more like jumping from a tree to tree. She was trying something new, trying to find a way of movement that felt right.

"Ooooh, is that a new technique?" Alicia's eyes lit up, seeing the difference in Rasa's movement.  Rasa's action inspired her.  She summoned four arms at a time -- her control over them improved after some secret training. She wrapped them on her limbs, and each time she began falling, she lashed out one to two arms to pump her back.  She soon fell in love with this way of using her ability.  Her movement was smooth and slick and resembled that of a pebble skipping across the surface of a lake.

"It's faster right? Like this." Rasa grinned, taking an example and moving the same way. It took her a while to get a similar effect using only two arms and it wasn't as smooth, but as they reached the crossroads, she had improved a lot.

"It is faster!" Alicia slowly landed on the ground and returned Rasa a smile.  "It is more effective than how I used to do it.  I feel less tired, too."  She looked at her palm, in awe of the new technique that she just learned.  "Rasa, which way did you go last time?"  Alicia squinted her eyes, but she still couldn't see what was at the end of each path.

"We went right," Rasa said. "There was this abandoned city there, like a battlefield-- something."

"Abandoned city that used to be a battlefield?"  Alicia tsked, "Aaaaand something like that wasn't told.  Of course.  Typical human priest.  We better all die off and let the grays eat him."  She humphed.

"Maybe he didn't know," Rasa said.

Alicia made a face, "Maybe.  But this place is only so big." She looked at the crossroads again and began walking to the left, "Since you chose right last time, let's go to the left."

"Okay," Rasa said and jumped on the ground starting to walk as well.

In a short while the trees surrounding the road became scarcer turning the scenery around them into meadows and in the distance abandoned houses could be seen, but when they stepped closer, the scenery suddenly changed and the houses were no longer abandoned but part of a booming little town full with humans walking on the streets. The air temperature became warm all of a sudden too. Rasa freaked out and jumped backwards, pulling Alicia with her-- frightened by the sight of humans. As soon as they were one step back, the scene disappeared and they were again on the road, seeing abandoned houses in the distance.

Blood drained from Alicia's face.  The town...! She almost forgot that it would be impossible for that town in her memory to be here, the only thing that was resonating in her head is run! As fast as you can!  At this moment, she had forgotten all about how she could easily protect herself with her ability-- she had returned to that helpless little girl five years ago.

"Ah!"  the force on her arm pulled her backwards, and the town was gone.  Alicia rubbed her eyes, as if waking up from a nightmare.  "What... was that?"  She suddenly remembered just how familiar this scene was.  It looked so much like a Mindforcer's ability.  However, Neo couldn't possibly have done something like this.  Alicia hesitated, but she still took a step forward.  The lively town reappeared.  Countless shadowy arms revolved around Alicia as she kept Rasa close to her-- you can never be more careful.

"Alicia-- don't--" Rasa stepped back, looking completely pale and frightened-- it didn't matter if the humans inside that place were real or not, she didn't want to go there, she felt sick enough to run.

Alicia froze, then noticed how unwell Rasa looked, being in this illusion.  She was silent for a few seconds, then stepped back with Rasa.  The town disappeared again.

Rasa crouched down and shivered, looking smaller than ever. Humans. And so much of them-- her breathing turned shallow and she couldn't stop her hands from trembling.

"Rasa--" Alicia's lips parted,  worried, but didn't know what to do.  "R-Rasa, don't scare me!  Are you all right?" She crouched down as well and placed a hand on Rasa's shoulder.  Rasa was shuddering-- Alicia panicked, regretting to ever deciding to pull Rasa into the illusion with her.

"I--I'm fine," she said, slowly calming down. "Can we go home?" She asked after that. Over anything she now simply wanted to climb in her bed and hide under the sheets and pretend she never saw the mass of humans. She tried not to think what might have happened if they spotted them - what looks they might cast on them, what they might do-- her scars seemed like burning up and she took her hands out from pockets, looking at the cigarette burn scars, like they might re-open any moment. She didn't consider for one bit that she might be able to fight them off - her helplessness that time, when they got to her, erased all confidence.

"It's okay, it's okay... We will go home." Alicia breathed out, relieved. She hugged Rasa tightly in her arms, "I'm so sorry, Rasa... I didn't mean to...  I- I mean, we are two Devas, so I thought--" She bit her tongue, and as the pain cleared her head, she realized just how reckless she was.  Why had she been so sure that it was an illusion?  She was blinded by vengeance and the desire to rewrite her tragic past, and the shallow knowledge of mindforcers she learned from Neo.  The more she thought about it, the more she regretted her action.  "Let's go home." She turned to the side, not wishing for Rasa to see her tear-reddened eyes.

Rasa was surprised by the hug, but it had a calming effect and soon enough her breathing returned to normal and her hands stopped burning. She nodded, pretending not to see the fine streak of red under Alicia's eyes. "That-- we should tell someone about it," Rasa said, making steps back towards the crossroads.

Alicia quickly wiped off the tears on her face.  She had cried more than the five years she spent in the brutal circus after coming to the church, but she secretly thought it might not be a bad thing, but today was just a train wreck.  "Let's."  She nodded and took off with a slash of a black arm.  She didn't want to stay here any longer.

Rasa followed and like that they took merely ten minutes to cross the distance that normally takes one two hours to walk. Instead of heading to tell someone about it, Rasa ran back to her bed and climbed under the sheets, thinking she might as well tell someone about it later.

Alicia saw Rasa heading to the dorm.  She must be tired.  I might as well go look for someone. She thought and began wandering around the house, hoping to find a staff that way.

Soon enough old priest happened to pass by and invited Alicia to his cabinet, saying he had a new stack of candies.

Alicia stared at him incredulously, suspicious of his intention.  She refused his offer of candies and mentioned the scene Rasa and she saw at the end of the crossroad.

Old priest became thoughtful and didn't insist on her coming. He said she should pass it to him through Neo, otherwise it's hard to tell what sort of gray storm it was, but he was certain that it was one. And that confirmed only one thing - the people Alicia and Rasa saw were not exactly illusions.

Alicia put a hand to her chest.  It was so fortunate that she didn't rush into that place with Rasa-- she couldn't even imagine, if the centre of that thing was someone like Reine-- what would happen to a pair of cumimi kids who couldn't even soulmatch together, that ended up in a gray storm?
